Biography1897BATEMAN, Newton, educator, born in Fairfield, New Jersey, 27 July 1822. His parents removed to Illinois in 1833, and he was graduated at Illinois College, Jacksonville, in 1843. After studying for a time in Lane theological seminary, he traveled extensively in the United States and then became principal of a St. Louis school. He was professor of mathematics at St. Charles College, Missouri, from 1847 to 1851, and then became the head of the Jacksonville, Illinois, public free school, acting at the same time as superintendent of the city schools and commissioner for the county. In 1858 he was principal of the Jacksonville female academy, and in the same year was chosen state superintendent of public instruction. Here he served altogether ten years, publishing five valuable reports and being active in establishing the state normal University. He had charge of the correspondence of the state provost-marshal general from 1862 to 1864, and afterward resumed his place as state superintendent. In 1875 he became president of Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. He has been a member of the state board of health since 1877, and has served three terms as its president.
