Clifford Bateman Ewart Jr., age 87, of Wilmington, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at his home.
He was born June 4, 1919, in Chicago, IL. Remembered are his parents, Clifford Bateman Ewart and Abbie May Inghram Ewart; daughter, Margaret Ewart Tapp and a sister, Nancy Ewart Prosser, all who preceded him in death.
Bate was a faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wilmington. He was a proud veteran serving during WW II and the Korean War as a pilot with the Air Force, and served as Assistant Air Attache to Libya.
Bate retired from the US Air Force and joined the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, caring for Palestinian refugees. He continued work with the United Nations and retired from the World Food Programme, United Nations. His postings with the United Nations included the Gaza Strip, West Iran, New Guinea, Beirut, Lebanon, the Philippines, Fiju Island, Pakistan and Southern, Middle and Western (Darfur) Sudan.
His community and fraternal memberships included Civitan International, YMCA, International Seamens Center volunteer, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Darmouth College Alumni Assoc., Carolina Yacht Club, Cape Fear County Club, Association of Former United Nations World Food Progamme Employees and the United Nations Association of the USA.
Bate is survived by wife, Rosanna "Posie" Welsh Ewart of the home; son, John Welsh Ewart of Costa Rica; grandson, David Y. Ewart of Harrisburg, NC; son-in-law, Henry C. Tapp Jr. and wife Teri of Apex, NC, and their children, Alicia and Drew; sister, Jane Ewart McCall of Redding, CT; sister-in-law, Sallie Welsh VanArsdale and husband Wilson of Sarasota, FL; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2006, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by The Rev. Dan Lynch and The Rev. John James Ormond.
