Clifford Bateman Ewart Jr., age 87, of Wilmington, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at his home.

He was born June 4, 1919, in Chicago, IL. Remembered are his parents, Clifford Bateman Ewart and Abbie May Inghram Ewart; daughter, Margaret Ewart Tapp and a sister, Nancy Ewart Prosser, all who preceded him in death.

Bate was a faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wilmington. He was a proud veteran serving during WW II and the Korean War as a pilot with the Air Force, and served as Assistant Air Attache to Libya.

Bate retired from the US Air Force and joined the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, caring for Palestinian refugees. He continued work with the United Nations and retired from the World Food Programme, United Nations. His postings with the United Nations included the Gaza Strip, West Iran, New Guinea, Beirut, Lebanon, the Philippines, Fiju Island, Pakistan and Southern, Middle and Western (Darfur) Sudan.

His community and fraternal memberships included Civitan International, YMCA, International Seamens Center volunteer, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Darmouth College Alumni Assoc., Carolina Yacht Club, Cape Fear County Club, Association of Former United Nations World Food Progamme Employees and the United Nations Association of the USA.

Bate is survived by wife, Rosanna "Posie" Welsh Ewart of the home; son, John Welsh Ewart of Costa Rica; grandson, David Y. Ewart of Harrisburg, NC; son-in-law, Henry C. Tapp Jr. and wife Teri of Apex, NC, and their children, Alicia and Drew; sister, Jane Ewart McCall of Redding, CT; sister-in-law, Sallie Welsh VanArsdale and husband Wilson of Sarasota, FL; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2006, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by The Rev. Dan Lynch and The Rev. John James Ormond.

The Marriage Certificate states that at the time of the wedding David James Ewart, age 26 years, lived in Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, that he was employed as a writer and bank agent, was a bachelor, and that his parents were David Ewart, Gentleman and Elizabeth Hannay. At the same time, Jessie was a spinster, age 23 years, living at Woodhead, Parish of Anwoth. Her parents were William Gordon, Land Surveyor and Farmer and her mother was Margaret McNay..² He married Harriet Bartlett on 8 April 1869 at 143 Collins Street East, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

     John was born on 20 February 1858 at Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.¹ He was the son of David James Ewart and Janet (Jessie) Gordon. He married Annie Tyler Bateman on 1 July 1884 at Knox County, Illinois, USA. (Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763–1900, Vol F, Page 106, License 7114). John died before 1930 at El Paso County, Colorado, USA.
     John immigrated to America in 1868.²
John and his sister Margaret were brought to America about 1866 by their grandfather, William Gordon, after the death of their mother Jessie Gordon Ewart in 1863. William died in 1869 and the children lived with his wife Grace Kirk as shown in the 1870 census. Grace then remarried and the children went to live with John and Margaret Gordon McDowell (their aunt). In the 1880 census they are listed as the nephew and niece of John and Margaret.

Margaret applied for a marriage license to wed Lewellyn A. Emery on 5 April 1884 at Henry County, Illinois, USA.² Margaret Elisabeth Gordon Ewart married Lewellyn A. Emery, son of John Emery and Sarah Potter, on 9 April 1884 at Galva, Henry County, Illinois, USA, The marriage was performed by C.C. Harrah, Minister of the Gospel and witnessed by Gilbert Emery and Cora McDowell.³ Margaret died an unknown date .
     Margaret immigrated to USA in 1868. Margaret came to America with her grandfather, William Gordon.. She was naturalized in 1880 at Illinois, USA.⁴

     Margaret was born on 23 March 1915 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. She is the daughter of Clifford Bateman Ewart and Abbie May Inghram. She married Howard Weaver McCall Jr. on 21 October 1938 at Irvington Prebyterian Church, Irvington, Westchester County, New York, USA.
