     Providence was employed as a merchant at Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, USA. Providence was unmarried. Providence Williams was the first white child born in what is now Providence, Rhode Island. He was named "Providence" because of God's goodness to his father, Roger. He lived in Newport, was a merchant, carrying on a trade between Newport and Providence, owning boats on the river. It is said that at the time of the King Philip's War, he came to Providence and took his mother and her children and other families to Newport for safety, while his father stayed in Providece and "went not away". He died unmarried in 1686 at the age of 48.
