Lorna Faye Petersen wrote about her grandfather Joseph Welter's death, "Grandpa (Joseph) Welter had beautiful white hair and a moustache - we would laugh at his nightly ritual of finding his cap and wearing it to bed. The nurses at the Tuberculosis Sanitarium spoke of his wanting to wear a nightcap there too. He spent about two years in the sanitarium because of having tuberculosis. ( I spent four years in the same institution for the same reason). It was right after I graduated from Teaching School. Grandpa was on leave from the Sanitarium after Christmas 1946. One night of twenty below zero or lower he and "Jack" (son Clarence Nickolas "Jack" Welter) began walking back to Ray's (son Ray Patrick Welter). They had been to a tavern. We assue Grandpa became exhausted, confused or even had a heart attack trying to find his way back to Ray's. He was found frozen to death. He had a drinking problem."
