Obituary of Nancy Beaumont Warren
Little Falls Transcript, Little Falls, MN, July 8, 1887
STILLWELL-At her home in the village of Little Falls, Minn., on Monday, July 4, 1887, at 4 o'clock p.m. of consumption, Nancy, wife of J.T. Stillwell, aged 58 years.
The deceased had been in gradually failing health for more than a year, and her death was not expected. The close of her life was very peaceful. She retained consciousness to the last, saying to those about here that she was ready and willing to die, and with loving words to the grief stricken family gently passed away.
She leaves a husband and three children, George W. and Mary A. of this place, and Mrs. Walter Tallant of Larimore, Dakota Territory who were all with her during her last hours.
She came to Little Falls in 1859, being one of the oldest settlers of this place, and well known throughout the community. Kind to the sick and needy, sympathetic to the afflicted, and charitable toward all, many without the broken family circle will feel the loss of a loving friend.
She was a devoted member of the Episcopal church, and the funeral service on Wednesday morning, were conducted by the rector, Rev. L.C. Birch. A large congregation was present to pay the final tribute to her memory.
Her body was interred on 6 July 1887 in in Oakland Cemetery, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota, USA.1
The following is a short biography of Nancy Beaumont Warren with information provided by Theresa Schenck, 132 Brook Valley Road, Towaco, NJ 07082 (May 1988)
From what I can piece together from unpublished documents, Nancy Warren was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lyman Marcus Warren and Mary Cadotte, as well as by her mother Charlotte Cadotte Warren and her stepfather, James Ermatinger. In 1838 Lyman and Mary moved from La Pointe to Chippewa City, Wisconsin, where he had been appointed sub-agent for the Indians who lived in the vicinity. This is about five miles north of Chippewa Falls. James Ermatinger and Charlotte probably moved to Vermilion Falls, now Jim Falls, about the same time. In 1835 the four Warren boys ( Edward and George - Truman and Charlotte's sons and William and Truman - Lyman and Mary's sons) were taken to Clarkson, N.Y. by their Warren grandfather (Lyman Warren) to be educated. Edward and George (twins) were 12, William was 10 and Truman was 8.
In 1838 Mary Cadotte Warren took her neice Nancy Beaumont Warren, and her own daughters to Clarkson to visit their grandfather and brothers. Nancy stayed until 1843 (age 18) and attended school at Clarkson Academy. The two older Warren girls, Julia and Charlotte, also stayed.
After her return from New York, Nancy probably went to live at La Pointe, Wisconsin where her uncle Lyman Warren returned after the death of his wife in 1843. The Warren girls returned to Wisconsin in 1844 and seemed to have lived the the Dr. Borup family where they attended school with his children. In 1848 Julia (age 16) and Nancy Beaumont (age 23) cousins, went to the Chippewa River to visit Jim and Charlotte Ermatinger (Nancy's mother and stepfather). Lyman Warren (her uncle) had died in 1847 at La Pointe, and Nancy's brother Edward had died in 1849 (age 26) in a hunting accident. It seems that the girls stayed with the Ermatingers for a while. About 1850 the Warren girls followed their brother William Whipple Warren to Minnesota. (Note: The Minnesota Territorial Census of 1850 shows Charlotte and Sophia living at Fort Gaines, now called Fort Ripley in Morrison County.
William Whipple Warren with wife Matilda Aitken and children Alfred A., Cordelia H. and William V. living at Gull Lake on 10th September. After 1850 Nancy Beaumont moved to Minnesota and was living with her cousin Julia in Swan River in 1852. Julia had just married Duncan Stuart. Sophia was now there too, and Charlotte, the other sister was in St Paul. Nancy probably married John Thomas Stilwell about this time. John Stilwell was a carpenter from New York. In the 1850 census he was shown living in the Sauk Rapids District - probably Swan River. He worked at his trade there and ran the busy hotel there. Later they moved to Little Falls where Mary Alice Stilwell was born in 1864. Nancy died in 1887 in Little Falls and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery next to her husband and infant child Emily A.

The following is a short biographical sketch of William written by his sister, Mary Warren English (Born: 15 Oct 1835 - Died: 15 August 1925)
Copied from the Family Record:
"Abraham Warren born Sept 25th, 1747 served six years in the Revolution - was first cousin of Gen. Jos Warren.
Lyman Warren (his son, born May 25th, 1771, in Hartford, Conn. Married in Berkshire, Mass. to Mercy Whipple.
Their son, Lyman Marquis Warren was born at the latter place in August 9th, 1794. Married at Mackinac, Michigan to Mary Cadotte Sept 6th, 1821. William Whipple Warren their eldest son was born in La Pointe, Madeline Is., Lake Superior, May 27th, 1825.
Lyman Marcus Warren , the father of William, came to the Lake Superior region at the early date of 1817 - and under the following circumstances. During the winter of 1815 and 1816 - Congress enacted a law that no foreigners should engage in trade with the Indians who did not become a citizen. The English traders who for years been engaged in trade at various points on Lake Superior - had after the enforcement of this law employed American clerks to take charge of their posts. Several of these young men came from the Western part of New York and Vermont on Lake Champlain. Lyman Marcus Warren was of this party and came to La Pointe in 1818 then the trading post of Michael Cadotte. And thus under this veteran trader - the young man soon established himself in trade - gaining friends and favors among the Indians - and in the year 1821 married Mary Cadotte - the third daughter of M. Cadotte. This same M. Cadotte is frequently mentioned in the narrative of "Alexander Henry". He speaks of him as possessing a powerful influence among the Indians and considered by them as their chief - and was not only his friend - but a friend to the English - and it was by him that the Chippewa of Lake Superior were prevented from joining Pontiac. His wife, Madame Cadotte was an Indian woman of the Chippewa nation and was very generally respected.
L. M. Warren was subsequently and for many years employed as chief _______ at La Pointe for the American Fur Company. He superintended the erection of the "New Trading Post" on Madeline Is. in 1834 and 35 under Ramsay Crooks.
During the year of 1831 the missionaries of the American Board - Rev. Sherman Hall and others, arrived at La Pointe and were warmly welcomed and treated with utmost kindness and hospitality by L. M. Warren and family - and great assistance rendered to them in the establishment of their mission. The Roman Catholic priest, Frederic Baraga came to the place in 1835 and also received great kindness and assistance - the entire family of M. Cadotte being of that faith. Sometime during the year of 1838 - L. M. Warren dissolved his connections with the American Fur Trade and removed to the Chippewa River to where he had been appointed as farmer and sub-agent to the Chippewa's. He located his post a few miles above Chippewa Falls and was there engaged in trade and in other business matters for several years. Mary, his wife, died at that place July 21st, 1843 and in the following winter, in the month of February, he made a winters passage through to La Pointe with three one-horse trains taking with him the remains of his wife and accompanied by his two youngest daughters - then but little girls.
This first American pioneer and permanent settler of Lake Superior - died at La Pointe Oct 10th, 1847, aged 53 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
William Whipple Warren was sent to the Mission School at Mackinac when only 8 years of age - but during the summer of 1836, his grandfather, Lyman Warren made a visit to La Pointe and on his return home - took William with him to Clarkson, New York where he attended school for two years - but was afterwards placed by his own father in the Oneida Institute at Whitesborough, 3 miles west of the city of Utica. The school then under charge of Pres. Beriah Green, a man famous in anti-slavery annals. William remained there 3 years and distinguished himself every way in the recitation room, in the playground, and in the social circle. He returned to La Pointe in the summer of 1841, in company with Rev. L. H. Wheeler and wife and Miss Abby Spooner, missionaries to La Pointe. He won a warm and life-long friendship with these most _____mable people by his genial and happy disposition - and ever ready and kindly assistance - during their long and tedious voyage up the Lake for this was before the days of railroads and steamboats on Lake Superior.
He had not entirely forgotten the Chippewa language - his mother's tongue - but in a very short time - could speak it almost as fluently as the English - and it is in connection with those early days of his return to the country - that he is even more frequently spoken of - by those who knew him as being so full of life - cheerfulness and socialibility - giving bold descriptions - telling heroic incidents - wonderful fairy tales from the Arabian Nights - Robinson Crusoe - to crowds of eager listeners - Indians of all classes - both old and young - and they in return - would relate the often told stories and traditions of the tribe.
In 1842 he was appointed Government interpreter under Rev. Alfred Brunson, Indian agent at La Pointe - and from that time - was engaged in the Indian and Government service until nearly the close of his life. He was married in the Summer of 1842 to Matilda Aitken, daughter of William Aitken of American Fur Trade. She was educated at the Mackinac Mission School.
It was during his interpretership under __. T. Hayes in 1844 and 1845 that his health began to fail - frequent exposures - long and severe winter expeditions, connected with the Indian service at that time, brought on lung difficulties which finally ended his life. He first removed with his family to Minnesota in the fall of 1845 - came to Crow Wing and Gull Lake - was there employed as farmer and interpreter under J. Fletcher - Winnebago Agent then also in charge of the Mississippi Chippewas.
He was also employed as interpreter in the removal of the Lake Superior Indians under J. S. Matrous - which however proved a failure in the end - William never approved of this removal - but still he faithfully performed his duties of his position - and it was during this last active service that he collected much of the material composing his writings - meeting with so many of the old men of the tribe - in their native homes - gave him an excellent opportunity for __ ____ _____. The manuscript was frequently hurriedly written and many times during great physical weakness, had strength and life been prolonged it would have been much more extensive and complete. He mentions in a letter written at that time as being far short to the original aim and design - and needed a careful revision, but this he did not live to do. He went east in the winter of 1853 for treatment - hoping that a benefit might be the result - but he started to return to his home about the last of May - but did not live to reach it - he died in St Paul at the home of his sister Mrs. E. B. Price - June 1, 1853 - at the early age of 28. He left four children, but only two are now living - William Tyler Warren and Mrs. Madaline Uran - both of White Earth. The mother - Mrs M. Fontaine is also living at White Earth, Minnesota.
P.S. I would here add that he was a true and a firm friend to the Indian and detested all manner of fraud and deceit. The only enemies he ever had are those that he had exposed by defrauding the Indians. He was a man of unblemished character and strictly temperate habits."
