Mrs. Henry Meyer Answers Summons

Came to Redwood County in 1873 - Funeral to be Conducted Sunday

Mrs. Henry Meyers, nee Melissa Winslow, passed away at her home in this city Monday afternoon, Sept. 21, at 1:15, as a result of old age. She was 78 years and 13 days old at the time of her death.

Deceased was born at Salem, Franklin County, Maine, Sept. 8th, 1847, and came to Waupun, Wis., with her parents in 1865. In 1869 she married in that city to Mr. Henry Meyer. To this union twelve children were born, six of whom preceded their mother in death. In 1873 the family moved to Minnesota, settling on a homestead just east of this city, where the deceased had since made her home.

Mrs. Meyer leaves to mourn her departure her husband and six children as follows: Albert Meyer of Minneapolis, Mrs. John Simning of Wabasso, Arthur Meyer of Los Angeles, Cal., Irvin Meyer of Roseburg, Ore., Mrs. Howard Pickett of Wabasso, and Raymond Meyer of Lindwood (ed. Lynnwood), Cal. Three brothers and two sisters also survive her, all of whom live at Beaver City, Neb., with the exception of Mrs. Geo. I. Davis of this city. She also leaves to mourn her loss 42 grand children and 22 great grand children.

Funeral services will be held at the home next Sunday afternoon at 2:00 and at the local Presbyterian church at 2:30 and will be in charge of Rev. Ross of Redwood Falls. Internment will be made in the New Avon cemetery east of town.

Mrs. Meyer was numbered among the early settlers of this community and her passing away will be keenly felt by her large circle of relatives and friends. The Standard extends sincerest sympathy to the bereaved husband and children in their hour of sorrow.

BurialSeptember 1925She was buried in September 1925 at New Avon Cemetery in Wabasso, Redwood, Minnesota, United States.1

BiographyJOSHUA WINSOR

This surname, said it to have been derived from the winding shore of the Thames River at Windsor, England, has been abbreviated from Windleshore or Windshore to Winsor. Joshua Winsor was among the first settlers in Providence, where he signed the compacts of 1637 and 1640. His Home Lot, which adjoined that of John Field on the south, became, in 1691, the property of Gideon Crawford, from whom Crawford Street obtained its name.

Nothing is known of the wife of Joshua Winsor, aside from the record of her death in February 1655. They had five children, one son and four daughters.

Samuel, the eldest child, born 1644, married January 2, 1667, Mercy Waterman, widow of Resolved and daughter of Roger Williams, and had three children: Samuel, Hannah and Joshua. Of these, Samuel, born November 18, 1677, married Mercy, daughter of Abraham and Deborah Harding and had a family of seven daughters and two sons. He was ordained Pastor of the First Baptist Church in 1733 and preached until his death in 1758. The following year, his son Samuel, the youngest child, born Nov. 1, 1722, succeeded to the pastorate. Joseph, the eldest son, born October 4, 1713, removed to Glocester, Rhode Island, where in 1763, he was ordained pastor of the Baptist Church and so
continued until his death in 1802, in the eighty-ninth year of his age. He was buried on his farm on Winsor Hill. He had five sons and six daughters, all of whom married and left numerous descendants. Judge Samuel Winsor, the youngest son, inherited his father's homestead, and resided there until his death. The Winsor geology, a small pamphlet by Olney Winsor, was printed in 1837.

DeathFebruary 1679Joshua Winsor died in February 1679 at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, United States.

Obituary16 January 2006Obituary of Victor Wokol
KTLZ online website, 16 January 2006

Victor (Vic) Wokal, age 92, of Glasgow passed away on January 15, 2006 at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital of natural causes.

Vic was born on October 3, 1913 on the family homestead twelve miles north of Dickinson, North Dakota to Joseph and Theresa Fisher Wokal. In 1926, the family moved to south of Bowman, North Dakota. In 1941, Vic began his flying career. On October 3, 1944, he bought land west of Bowman and, along with his brother Joe, established Wokal Flying Service. While in Bowman, he was an active member of St. Charles Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Squadron Commander of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). In 1962, he and his brother seized the opportunity to purchase a Fixed Base Operation (FBO) in Glasgow, Montana. He became a Cessna Dealer in 1947. Vic and his family moved to Glasgow in 1963. Later, Vic became sole owner of the business. As an active member in the Glasgow community, he was on the Board of Directors for the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce, a finance committee member of St. Raphaelâ•˙s Catholic Church, the treasurer of Valley Hangar Association, and after retirement, was appointed to the Valley County Airport Commission. In addition to the FBO, Vic served as Airport Manager. He also served as the Station Manager for Frontier Airlines and as a United States Customs Officer. In 1987, Vic retired and sold his business.

Vic's love for aviation led him to a career of instructing hundreds of students; crop dusting; providing air ambulance services; and assisting people in need during cold, hard winters by delivering mail and food and providing emergency transportation. He also provided instruction to hundreds of GI students through the GI program. One of his proudest accomplishments was the establishment of STAT Air Ambulance Service through a partnership with Kyle Hopstad and the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital. Glasgow is the smallest community in the United States with a twin engine, pressurized air ambulance service.

Vic loved music. For a number of years, the Wokal Family Orchestra played for dances and proms throughout the area.

Most of all, Vic loved his wife and family. In 1941, he was married to Eva Sletto at St. Charles Church in Bowman, North Dakota. Vic and Eva had three daughters: Anita, Donna, and Kris.

Vic received many awards, for which he felt very honored. These awards ranged from the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce's "Boss of the Year", to the Montana Pilot's Association's Senior Pilot Award in 1990 and a Special Citation from the national Aircraft Owner's & Pilot's Association (AOPA). Two of the most significant honors during his life included naming of Glasgow airport "Wokal Field" and the designation of the "Wokal Fix."

Vic was a man of spirit. It wasn't unusual to see him plowing snow or fueling an airplane in a suit and tie. One of his biggest thrills was on his 90th birthday, when he flew in an open cockpit airplane, piloted by Joe Etchart of Glasgow, and performed nine loops, one for every decade of his life. He is now an aviator in God's heavenly squadron.

Vic will be sincerely missed by his wife of 64 years, Eva; his daughters Anita (Lawren) Frost, of Glasgow; Donna (Gary) Farnsworth of Poplar; and Kris (Kevin) Magstadt of Bismarck; his five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; his brothers Vic (Barbara) Mihulka of Grafton, North Dakota; Joe (Amy) Mihulka of Bowman, North Dakota and Pete Mihulka of Glendive; Sisters-in-law Olga Wokal of Watford City, North Dakota and Alice Wokal of Bowman, North Dakota; and his many wonderful friends and fellow aviators.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, Joe, and Tony, and sisters Beatrice Cotes and Eleanor Pavlicek.

"Keep 'em flying boys!"
Burial18 January 2006He was buried on 18 January 2006 at Highland Cemetery in Glasgow, Valley, Montana, United States.
Obituary10 March 2006Obituary of Victor G. Wokal
Aviation News, March 10, 2006
Victor Wokal dies at 92

Victor Wokal of Glasgow, Mont., died Jan. 15. Known to a broad range of pilots simply as Vic, he started Wokal Flying Service at his native Bowman, N.D., in 1944 and bought the FBO at Glasgow in 1962, later moving there. He was a Cessna dealer at both airports, Glasgow’s airport manager for many years, station manager for Frontier Airlines and a U.S. Customs officer in addition to running the Glasgow FBO.

Glasgow International Airport (GGW) is named Wokal Field in his honor and there is a Wokal Fix, nearby, on FAA charts.

Wokal retired in 1987, but continued flying. For his 90th birthday he flew in an open cockpit biplane with his friend Joe Etchart. They performed nine loops, one for each decade of Wokal’s life.
