Obituary19 June 2014Obituary of Stuart "Ted" Wharton
Conger-Morris Funeral Directors website

Stuart "Ted" T. Wharton passed away at his home in Medford Ore. June 18, 2014.

Ted was born in Gold Hill Ore. October 26, 1919 to Howard E. Wharton and Ida F. (Starns) Wharton.

He finished his freshman year at Gold Hill High School, then moved to Medford to join his parents and graduated Medford High School in 1938.

Ted's life-long love of hunting, fishing, and hiking began in Gold Hill when he was a youngster. He passed this love on to his family and Boy Scout troops.

As a young man Ted went to work for Sam Jennings Company in Medford and spent 45 years serving Jenning's customers faithfully, retiring as a Manager in 1985, except for two miltary stints with the U.S. Army: WWII & Korea.
Ted was involved in the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years, serving as not only a Scoutmaster, but as a trainer of Scoutmasters. He received all Scouting honors awarded. Ted also belonged to the Oregon Log & Lumber Truckers league. After retirement he began a business and after 10 years sold out and retired for a second time at 75. He then became involved with the Gold Hill Historical Society as a Chapter member and helped set up many of the unique displays, including moving in the Stamp Mill.

Ted's love of the outdoors included outdoor cooking, and teaching wilderness survival and compass courses. He loved gun collecting, outdoor photography, water and snow skiing and writing and telling short stories and old woodsman fables.
He epitomized DIY mechanics and carpentry, including building from scratch three Jeeps and a Jeep pick-up with a boom for woodcutting.

Ted loved learning new innovations and even had a cell phone, but decided a computer might be taking it too far.
His love of the outdoors, especially in Jackson County, teaching others about it and its history, telling all the tales (mostly true) will be greatly missed. He was a terrific Dad, Uncle, Grandpa and friend.

He is survived by his son, David A Wharton and daughter, Donna F. (Carl) Saddler, his brother Charles B Wharton, 2 grandsons: Stephen M. (Lee) Saddler and Matthew D (Carrie) Saddler and 4 great-grandchildren: Jared R., Kelsey P., Caleb J. and Jacob L. Saddler.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Armella (Souza).

There will be a Gathering of Rememberance on Sunday, July 20th, from 10am-12pm at the Gold Hill Historical Museum. No flowers, please donate to either the Boy Scouts or the Gold Hill Historical Society.
BurialJune 2014He was buried in June 2014 in Rock Point Cemetery at Gold Hill, Jackson, Oregon.

BiographyWHIPPLE BRANCH SUFFERS FROM GENETIC DISEASE
     By Blaine Whipple

Researchers are zeroing in on a gene that causes a serious disease for a line of the Whipple family descending from Capt. John Whipple of Providence, RI. Their goal is to understand and eventually find a treatment for the lethal disorder. Whipple families in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio have been identified as carriers of the disease.

Known as olive-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), also known as dominant spinopontine atrophy (DSPA), the disease is a mystery. No one knows what causes it or how to stop or even slow its lethal progression. The genetic material in each body cell contains about three billion bits of information. The goal is to narrow the location of the gene to a single small stretch of one of the 23 chromosomes that carry all of the body's blueprints. Researchers found a disease causing a gene in a certain area on chromosome #6 in some families, but not in this family.

Descendants of Benjamin Whipple and Sarah Bernon are the first generation known to suffer from the disease. It appeared in the families of their sons Daniel and Ephriam and likely hundreds of Whipples have died from its terrible effects. The disorder is equally distributed between sexes, suggesting an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Fortunately, not all members of the family inherit the disease but each child of an affected person is at 50% risk.

Alice Lazzarini, M.S., Director, Clinical Genetics, Department of Neurology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, is leading a team studying the disorder. Descendants willing to share medical histories can contact her at 1 Robert Wood Johnson Place, CN 19, New Brunswick, NJ 08903-0019, telephone (908) 937-7730 or 937-7949.

"This is a difficult disease," Ms. Lazzarini says. "After years of research we still do not know its cause or how to treat it. If we are to be successful in isolating the causative gene, we need family members to share their medical histories and authorize autopsies on those who die from ii. Our goal is to isolate the culprit gene, figure out how it goes wrong, and then design treatments to correct the defect."

The disease usually begins in the mid 30 age group although it has been detected as early as 18. Symptoms include uncertain gait - leading observers to believe the person is intoxicated, slurred speech, double vision, and cramps. Conditions slowly worsen. Writing and buttoning clothes become difficult and then impossible; incontinence follows. Eventually, unable to stand, patients are confined to a wheelchair and can eventually require hospitalization.

Benjamin Whipple died in his one-hundredth year in 1788 leading researchers to believe his wife's family introduced the disease into this Whipple line. His first wife was Sarah Bernon, daughter of Gabril Bernon, a French Huguenot.
