Article from "The History of North Dakota" by Clement A. Lounsberry,
Volume III - Page 73, Published by the S.J. Clarke Publishing Company, Chicago, 1917
Rodolph Ray Richard, publisher of the Golden Valley Progress of Beach, was born at Little Falls, Minnesota, April 12, 1888, a son of Theodore Richard whose birth occured in St. John's, province of Quebec, whence he came to the United States the family home being established near Little Falls, Minnesota, where they cast their lot with pioneer settlers. Theodore Richard became chief clerk of the Richard Brothers Mercantile Company of Little Falls, one of the first stores of the town. He married Vitaline Lord, of Canadian birth, and both are still living. Theirs is a notable record, for among their eight children no death has occured.
Rodolph R. Richard pursued his education in the public schools of Little Falls and in the Little Falls Business College, after which he entered the office of the Little Falls Herald, where he learned the printer's trade, spending a period of six years in connection with that paper. He then went to Glendive, Montana where he became manager of the Dawson County Review for James A. Metcalf, remaining manager there for a little more than a year, when the paper was sold. Mr. Richard then became connected with the Glendive Independent but after a short time removed to Miles City, Montana, where he became circulation manager and business solicitor for the Miles City Star and the Miles City Independent. His connection with these two papers covered about six months, at the end of which time he was transferred to the Yellowstone Journal, a stock growers journal, for which he was a reporter and solicitor for a period of six months. He next became connected with the Picket at Red Lodge, Montana, in the same capacity, spending three months in connection with that journal.
On the 15th of May, 1904, he arrived in Beach and purchased the Golden Valley Progress, which he has since edited and published. It is owned by Mr. Richard and his brother, Harvey, and the paper has a circulation of twelve hundred, covering a territory of which Beach is the center of a fifty mile radius. The circulation of the paper is larger than than any other journal in the county and the office is equipped in a most modern manner, having a linotype machine, a modern two revolution rotary press and all the equipment found in a first class printing office. His brother Harvey is the linotype operator and in addition they employ two others in the office.
Mr. Richard has devoted practically his entire life to the printing businesss although for a brief period in early manhood he was employed in the mercantile establishment of an uncle in Little Falls and also as a drug clerk. He found the printing business congenial and in that line has steadily worked his way upward being now at the head of a growing and profitable business.
In politics, Mr. Richard is an independent republican and his religious faith is evidenced in his membership in the Catholic church of Beach. His attention, however, is chiefly concentrated upon his paper and he has made it an excellent journal - a credit to the community in which it is gladly received.
The following is a portion of a recording made in 1988 of Marie Antoinette Richard Martin as told to her daughter Carol Martin Graff.
"Harvey and Ray had a newspaper in Beech, North Dakota. They didn't get along great on it - they were two different people. Anyway, they stuck it out. Then, when I was going to high school they had me come there and I learned quite a bit too and that's when I used to work on their books. Ray had taken a course in bookkeeping and he taught me and I was good at it if I do say so myself. Then they had me doing jobs like letterheads and wedding announcements. No, I didn't set type but it was linotype. The name of the paper was "The Golden Progress" and it was a weekly. They made pretty good, advertising and all.
The non-partisan league locked Ray up overnight in one of the places. They had it in for Ray - he had put some articles in the paper about them. They didn't arrest him - it was just some people that did it. Ray was the editor but before that he had been a reporter - that's where he started, as a reporter. Then he decided he was going to be a linotype operator and that's what Harvey did too. Harvey and Ted were linotype operators because there was good money in it.
Harvey and Ray were linotype operators until they died. They were in San Francisco working for different people. Ted was in Santa Rosa. he was good at machinery, he was fixing their linotype machines, etc. He had a wonderful job in San Francisco - don't know about Harvey."
