Marie was born on 12 April 1901 at Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota, USA.2 She was the daughter of Theodore Harold Richard and Vitaline Mary Lord. She married Lou Jelvik. She married Frances Prue. She married Sidney W. Martin circa 1920. Marie died 22 June 1990 at Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, USA, at age 89.
In a letter to the preparer from John Richard, Sun City, AZ, dated 25 July 1991, he stated that:
"Theodore Richard claimed in the divorce procedings that she (Marie Antoinette) was not his child, something that Vitaline contested. I talked to Antoinette about her mother's story which was that she left Theodore when she discovered his adultery with Frances Ella. Unfortunately, she did not leave him in time, for she had gotten pregnant by him before he left. When she returned to Little Falls and found out about her pregnancy, she was afraid that Theodore would take the child away from her. So she kept it a secret from Theodore. The timing of the pregnancy corresponds with her being in Bemidji as documented by Theodore's statement in the divorce proceeding that she had left him on the 23rd of July 1900. This would place her in his bed and board at such a time that the nine month usual pregnancy period would be in mid-April 1901. Antoinette was born on April 23rd. I can see why the court held that Antoinette was indeed Theodore's child and awarded her alimony for support. My father, Ulysses, was about 14 years old at the time that the children were moved to Bemidji by Vitaline, and he remembered the violent quarrel and what led up to to it, and he always told us that Theodore was the guilty party in the marriage, even though he was closer to his father than his mother. Dad went to Washington with Theodore and Frances Ella and was in a position to know the truth of the matter."

The following is a biography of Rosalie given by her to Minnie W. Cochrane for the Minnesota Historical Society as part of the Works Progress Administration (Project 3870) in October 1937.
Rosalie Richard was born on a farm near St. Johns, Canada, June 15, 1870. She is the daughter of Francois X. Richard and Philomene Poutre Richard. Francois X. Richard was born on a farm near St. Johns, Canada, in 1835. He was the son of Alexis Richard, who was born in Eastern Canada in 1800 and came near to loosing his head fighting for "Canadian rights" in 1836 "when the English Government failed to keep its promises to Canada".
Alexis Richard, Grandfather to Rosalie, came to Little Falls from Canada in 1871 to join his son, Edmond Richard. Francois X. Richard (father of Rosalie) came to Little Falls in 1880 from Fall River, Mass., having gone there from Canada shortly after his marriage. While living in Fall River, he worked as a carpenter and contractor. On coming to Little Falls he bought a farm of 160 acres at Oak Ridge five miles east of Little Falls. He lived there until about 1901 when he built a house at 605 N.E. Fourth Street, retired from active work and moved into Little Falls. He died in February 1921. His wife died in 1925.
Philomene Poutre Richard was born in Eastern Canada, April 15, 1839. Her family took an active part in the Canadian Rebellion of 1836. Her uncle, Felix Poutre, was noted for his many adventures. Mrs. Dominick Richard has a book which was owned by her husband (brother of Rosalie) describing some of them. This book was written in French by Felix Poutre in 1884. Published by Beauchemin and Valvis of Montreal. It is entitled, "Memories of a Prisoner of the Canadian State", in 1835. The copy owned by Mrs. Richard is the second edition. The book tells how Felix Poutre, working as he felt for the rights of his people (The French Canadians) "swore men in, to fight against the Queen" (Victoria of England) and was sentenced to death. Before he was captured he hid for three weeks in a hollow tree. His brother (Rosalie Richard's grandfather) carried food to him at night. In trying to cross the line into the United States, Felix Poutre was captured, taken to Montreal, tried, and sentenced to death. In order "to escape the death sentence, he played the fool, turning everything upside down in the jail," pretending to be insane. Different doctors examined him but as he was a large, strong man, and handled them roughly they became afraid of him and finally put him outside the jail. Too smart to try to escape, he took off his boots, and carrying them on a cane, walked around the jail apparently trying to get back in. When night came he slipped away under cover of the darkness and escaped across the border into the United States. The book contains some quaint illustrations of his adventures. The spy who led to his capture is pictured in high silk hat and ruffled cravat. There is one picture of the prisoner trying to choke one of the doctors and another of him turning a stove in the jail upside down, making plain why his departure was desired. The picture of the prisoner departing barefooted, his boots tied on a cane swung over his shoulder, and a fur cap on his head is quite unique.
Besides writing this book, Felix Poutre dramatized it and with a group of players, presented it in various towns in the United States. When Rosalie Richard lived in Fall River, the play was put on there and she remembers Mr. Poutre being entertained at her father's home. He was tall, over six feet, distinguished looking and always wore a hugh silk hat and caped overcoat.
Rosalie Richard attended public schools at Fall River, coming to Little Falls with her parents in 1880. Speaking of life on the farm Miss Richard said, "The first few years my father had oxen as well as horses. He thought oxen were better for breaking new land. Crops were good. Wheat was the principal crop. He raised some potatoes." Recalling life in Little Falls when she was a young lady, Miss Richard said, "I remember we used to hold church bazaars in the Opera House. I was there when the balcony collapsed.. "That was May 10, 1887 when Little Falls was celebrating the the Little Falls Water Power Co." The crowd proved too great for the balcony and it slowly sank, cutting off the front exit. My brother told me to keep quiet and let the crowd go by. This we did and none of our party were hurt. One funny thing happened near us. Just before the accident a group of girls near by were having a gay time making fun of a big country lad who sat near them. When the crash occurred one of the girls was so badly frightened she jumped astride the boy's neck and remained on his shoulders until the excitement lessened. He remarked, 'Lady, now you can get off.'"
For thirty years Miss Richard was a dressmaker in Little Falls, going to the Cities to study styles, quite different from those of today. "Skirts were long and full seven yards around. Pleated woolen skirts were popular. Under their dress skirts the ladies wore three or four starched white skirts until they looked like balloons. Waists were stayed with whalebones, sleeves were long except in evening gowns. One time even the street dresses had trains. More woolen materials were used than silk which was rather scarce. Everyone wore woolen underwear in winter."
For the last six years Miss Richard has spent part of each year with her nieces in Minneapolis. She made her home at 605 N.E. Fourth St. into two apartments and resides in the upper one. She is a member of Saint Francis Xavier Church.
Memories of Rosalie Richard
by nephew Bob Barber (December 2010)
I remember aunt Rosalie (Richard) very well because she spent about six months of every year living with us, from about 1931, when my dad died, until 1951 when my mom passed away. During this period, our little family consisted of our mother (Marguerite St. Martin), her sister, Eleanor St. Martin, my brother Bill (Barber)and myself (Bob Barber). In fact, however, Aunt Rosalie was always considered a family member even though she always divided her time between our place and her home in Little Falls.
Rosalie adored my mother (Marguerite St. Martin) but she and Aunt Eleanor (St. Martin), who was like another mother to Bill and I,were not always on good terms and I think it had to do with her deceased sister (Rochelle Richard) who was the mother of our mom (Marguerite), Eleanor, Georgianna, et al. No doubt she believed that her sister (Rochelle Richard) was mistreated by Anton St. Martin and she may well have been right. However, Eleanor loved her father very much and resented Rosalie's frequent negative references to the St. Martins. Frequently, for example, when my brother got into troubleor did something dumb, Rosalie would say "that's the St. Martin in him coming out".
Although French was her first language, Rosalie was perfectly at home with English. However,
she usually waited until she got home to go to confession because she felt more comfortable
confessing to Father Lamont at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Little Falls.
I remember a visit in the summer of 1937 or 1938 from Rosalie's brother, Gill (Gilbert Richard)and his wife who were on their way to Little Falls from their home in Davenport, Iowa. This was the only time I sawGilbert but he was very kind to Bill and me. I don't remember his wife's name but I believe she was not his first wife as she seemed a little ill at ease in the company ofEleanor and my mom. They only stayed a couple of days but I still have a photo of Bill and I standing near uncle Gill's big Buick.
When we visited aunt Rosalie in Little Falls, we often stayed part of the time at Rosalie's place on 4th Avenue and slept on the front porch. She had the place divided, she lived in the upstairs rooms and Lawrence Richard and his family lived downstairs. In those days they still had the privy outside. Lawrence had electric power downstairs but Rosalie still had kerosene lamps and
pump water in her rooms. Nevertheless I remember those days fondly.
I recall Rosalie telling us about the French rebellion against the English and her uncle having to
hide in the trunk of a tree for many days to avoid capture by the hated English troops.I remember wondering how a man hides for any length of time in a hollow tree. Rosalie didn't think too highly of the Brits-thought them uncouth. To show the superiority of the French as compared with the English, she told of a Frenchman having dinner with an Englishman and the French fellow was startled when the Limy let go with loud belch. To show his displeasure, the Frenchman replied with a big fart.
I last saw Rosalie at St Otto's Residence in Little Falls in about 1964. She was over a hundred
at the time but she in good spirits but just a bit confused at times. She asked about my mom (Marguerite St. Martin) like she was still alive and called me Ralph a couple of times. She gave her place to the monastery in exchange for their promise to take care of her for the rest of her life. She did alright on the deal as she lived to be one hundred and eight!
