     Sister Marie Nativity Richard, a Sister of St. Joseph for 75 years, passed away at Marywood Residential Community, Crookston, November 9. She had celebrated her 93rd birthday on November 2.
     Born to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Richard of Little Falls on November 2, 1893, Emelie Beatrice grew up in that area until 1911 when she entered the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Bourg. Making her novitiate in France, she received the religious garb and the name Sister Marie Nativity on April 22, 1912. After pronouncing first vows in 1913, she returned to the States where she began her long teaching career which spanned 57 years.
     For many years she taught grades seven and eight in schools staffed by Sisters of St. Joseph in Crookston, Argyle, Kilkenny, Stewart, Somerset and Superior.
     Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Catherine, Sister Marie Nativity majored in English and French, teaching both these subjects and social studies at St. Joseph's Academy until her retirement at St. Joseph's Provincial House in 1968.
     In1972 she was elected the representative of the retired Sisters on the Apostolic Committee of her community, a position which fitted her well because she loved to be with people, working with them and for them.
     Sister Marie nativity leaves a legacy of christian example. As an artist, she loved poetry, writing verses herself, or capturing beauty in exquisite needlework and other crafts. In one of the last things she wrote, she said, "We must, by our very being, be formers of christian ideals so as to be the light of the world." This had been her life. Sister Marie nativity is survived by a sister, Mrs. Antoinette Prue, of Sacramento, California, and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters..
