Obituary23 January 1936Obituary of Mathias Schmitt

Belle Plaine Herald, January 23, 1936

MATT SCHMITT DIED TUESDAY END CAME AT HOSPITAL--FUNERAL ON FRIDAY.

One of our old time residents and prominent businessman of earlier years died this week in the person of Matt Schmitt. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the St. Cloud hospital where he had been taken just a week before.
Deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Schmitt. He was born in Germany 76 years ago and was seven years old when he came to this country with his parents, the family coming direct to Belle Plaine. The elder Schmitt founded the Belle Plaine Brewery, and upon his death his son Matt carried on the business, which was a flourishing local industry for a long period. It was discontinued before the advent of prohibition, and for the past twenty years deceased had been retired from active business affairs.
Surviving him are seven children; namely, Christian, Urban, Gerold, Mildred (Sister Bernal), Helen (Mrs. Milton Norman), Rose (Mrs. Ressner Nelson), and Kathryn. His wife died 25 years ago. Matt Schmitt was the last of the Christian Schmitt family. The remains were brought to the home of Mrs. G. H. Weibeler and the funeral will be held Friday morning with services at Sts. Peter and Paul's church at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Burial24 January 1936He was buried on 24 January 1936 at Saints Peter and Paul's Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine, Scott, Minnesota, United States.2

Obituary22 March 1934Obituary of Peter Schmitt

Belle Plaine Herald, March 22, 1934

P. J. SCHMITT PASSED AWAY. A FRIEND OF THOUSANDS THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

Peter J. Schmitt, one of Belle Plaine's most popular native sons and Jordan's leading citizen, died at his home in Jordan last Thursday morning at 4 o'clock. In poor health for a considerable period, it had not been generally recognized how serious his condition was and the news of his death came as an unexpected blow to his thousands of friends.
He was mayor of the city of Jordan at the time of his death and was one of the veteran and most highly honored employees of the Schmidt Brewing company of St. Paul. On the morning of the funeral the big St. Paul plant closed down as an expression of respect to him, and all business places in Jordan were closed.
Peter Schmitt would have been 60 years the first of May. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schmitt, and grew to manhood here, early associating himself with his father in the sale of farm implements. He became a traveling salesman for the Plano Harvester company and about 32 years ago established his headquarters in Jordan, to take advantage of the more favorable train connections there. About this time he married Miss Louise Pilney of Jordan, who has been his loyal helper ever since. His success as a traveling salesman brought brought him an offer from the Schmidt Brewing company of St. Paul, and for thirty years he has been with that company, his work in later years being that of a good will ambassador for the company.
Surviving are his widow and six children, namely; Anthony, Delores, Marie, Lucille, Peter junior and Angela. He also leaves four brothers, Chris L., William and John of St. Paul and Joseph of Belle Plaine, and six sisters, Mrs. Fred L. Gericke of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Frank Monzel, Mrs. Bob Mullin, Emma, Elizabeth and Angela Schmitt of St. Paul.
The funeral held Saturday morning from the Jordan Catholic church was about the largest ever witnessed in Jordan and the large church could not hold the multitude. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Peter Schmitt numbered his friends by the thousands, and they embraced people from every town in southern Minnesota but among none of whom was he held in higher regard than by those of this community.
