Obituary21 September 1939Obituary of Albert Schmitt
Belle Plaine Herald, September 21, 1939

KINDLY AGED MAN IS CALLED. ALBERT SCHMITT LIVED IN BELLE PLAINE FOR SIXTY-FOUR YEARS.

Albert Schmit, one of Belle Plaine's oldest residents, died Wednesday night of last week, September 13, at his home here. He had been in failing health for a long time. While confined to his home since last winter, he was nevertheless able to be about the house most of the time. His age was 85 years, 6 months and 20 days.

Albert Schmitt was a native of Austria. At the age of 21 he came to this country and located in Belle Plaine. Four years later he married Mary Nesius, who also lived here at the time, and this community was the home of the couple throughout their lifetime. His wife died five years ago.

Surviving him are four children, namely; Mrs. Nic Verkinnes of St. Cloud, Gust Schmitt of Carver, Lawrence and Jac. of Belle Plaine; 23 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He also leaves one sister, Lena Schmitt, of St. Paul. Two daughters preceded their father in death.

During the many years among us, Albert Schmitt showed himself to be a hard-working, industrious, kindly man. His lot in life was that of a laborer and during those earlier years he toiled in the brickyard and on the railroad section. As long as his health permitted and he was able to work, he missed no opportunity to engage in honest toil. Quiet and unassuming he had the respect of everyone.

The funeral was held Saturday morning with requiem mass at Sts. Peter and Paul's church at 9 o'clock. Father Miller officiated and burial was in the family lot in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris, Urban and Raymond Schmitt, Al Schommer, Milton Norman and Tony Krekelberg. Those who came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Nic Verkinnes and daughter Helen from St. Cloud, Lena Schmitt, Marian Verkinnes, Sister Bernall, from St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Gust Schmitt, son Raymond, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Benty and son from Carver, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Grausam and Grandpa Grausam from Waconia, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Norman and family, Mrs. Mary Norman and Mrs. Morisette from Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schmitt and Mr. and Mrs. Ras Nelson from Jordan.

Obituary2 September 1943Obituary of Louisa Schmitt

Belle Plaine Herald, September 2, 1943

REMEMBERED BY MANY HERE, MRS. F. J. GERICKE DIED AT HOME IN GARY, IND.

Mrs. Fred J. Gericke, nee Louise Schmitt, died last Saturday morning at her home in Gary, Indiana, and the funeral was held there on Tuesday morning. Her brother, Joe E. Schmitt, sister Mrs. Frank Monzell of St. Paul, and sister-in-law Mrs. P. J. Schmitt of Jordan, left for Gary to attend the funeral. No information is available as to the cause of death.
Mrs. Gericke was born in Belle Plaine on August 24th, 66 years ago, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schmitt. Here she grew to womanhood, and will be best remembered by the familiar name of "Wishie Schmitt." She was married to Fred J. Gericke, one of our popular young businessmen of the time, and Belle Plaine continued to be their residence for some years after their marriage.
About 35 years ago the family moved to Lake Mills, Wis., where they resided for many years, later locating at Gary, Indiana. Retired from active pursuits for some time, Mr. and Mrs. Gericke were enjoying the fruits of their labors in a pleasant home and travel. Their last visit to Belle Plaine was two years ago.
She is survived by her husband, six sons and three daughters, namely, Fred, Julius, Edward, Robert and Philip Gericke, Mrs. Mercedes Volkman of Gary, Ind; Raymond Gericke of Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Dorothy Hatter of Jefferson, Wisc.
Three brothers and four sisters also mourn her passing, William and John Schmitt of St. Paul, Joe E. Schmitt of Belle Plaine, Mrs. Frank Monzel, Elisabeth Schmitt, Mrs. Alma Topping, Mrs. Clara Mullen and Angela Schmitt, all of St. Paul.

Obituary15 June 1911Obituary of Bertha Schmitt
Belle Plaine Herald, June 15, 1911

DEATH OF A YOUNG MOTHER. MRS. BERTHA SCHMITT, WIFE OF MATT SCHMITT, IS CALLED TO ANOTHER WORLD. END CAME ON SATURDAY AND FUNERAL HELD THE FOLOWING MONDAY FORENOON.
An unusually sad event is to be recorded this week in the death of Mrs. Bertha Schmitt. the young wife of Matt Schmitt. The end came on Saturday, June 10th, after an illness of two weeks, in which everything possible was done to save her life but to no avail.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schmitt and was born in Belle Plaine Nov. 1, 1881. She grew up in the community and never lived apart from it. Nine years ago her marriage to Matt Schmitt took place and seven children have been born to them, four boys and three girls, the oldest only 8 years last month and the youngest a baby two weeks old.
The funeral was held on Monday from St. Peter and Paul's church. Rev. Father Germain officiated at the last rites and preached a beautiful and touching sermon. The funeral was very largely attended, and those from a distance who were present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rohweder, Albert Schmitt's sister, Frank Monzel and Jos. Schmitt, from St. Paul; J. N. Schram, of Green Isle; Jos. Conter, of Shakopee; Mrs. P. J. Schmitt and Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Weibeler, of Jordan; Mr. and Mrs. Constantine Thill and Mrs. Casper Verkinnes and sons William and Henry, of Carver. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved husband, parents and the many motherless little children.

CHRISTIAN SCHMITT DIES - BUSY LIFE OF WELL KNOW BUSINESS MAN AND PROMINENT CITIZEN BROUGHT TO AN END.

On Monday morning, June 13th, '04, an old and prominent resident of this borough passed from us in the death of Christian Schmitt. He attained the ripe old age of 87 years. For the past three years he was in poor health, though until then he enjoyed a rugged constitution. Old age can be said to be the cause of his death.

Mr. Schmitt was born in Oberemmel, near Trier, Germany, Sept. 29, 1817. He emigrated to America in 1857, coming to Chicago where he remained three months. He then took up his residence here, where he engaged in the blacksmith business with his brother Nic. about four years. He was the founder and the proprietor of the Belle Plaine Brewery.

Surviving him are four children, Jacob Schmitt, Mrs. W. H. Weibeler, Mrs. S. Bowler, of Denver, Colorado; and Matt Schmitt. Twenty-nine grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren also survive him. His wife preceded him thirteen years ago, and three children have also departed.

Mr. Schmitt was a successful business man and an upright citizen. He enjoyed the respect of everyone who knew him, and the affection of those bound to him by closer ties.. His death is felt by all.

REMAINS OF CHRIST SCHMITT BROUGHT HERE FOR FUNERAL

Very unexpected was the news of the death in St. Paul last Friday of Christian L. Schmitt, a native son of Belle Plaine. Death was due to hardening of the arteries. He had not been ill very long, and no one realized the end was so near. His age was 66.
Christian Lawrence Schmitt was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schmitt, and he was born in Belle Paine December 11, 1872. Here he grew to manhood and married Maud Nichols, daughter of former post master W. H. Nichols. Chris had learned the lumber trade under F. J. Whitlock and that business became his lifework. He managed a yard in Belle Plaine for a time, then took over a yard in Waubay, S. D. , and later at Moose Jaw, Sask., Canada, where the family spent a long period of years. About eleven years ago he and his family returned to Minnesota and took up their residence in St. Paul where he remained until his death.
Surviving him are his widow and the following children: Alfred Schmitt at Saskatoon,Sask; Mrs. W. M. Green at Wilkie, Sask; Mrs. A. Gehrmann, Mrs. Wm. Fischer, Helen, Genevieve and William Schmitt of St. Paul. There are nine grandchildren. He also leaves six sisters and three brothers; namely: Mrs. Frank Monzel, Mrs. Robert Mullen, Mrs. Alma Topping, Elizabeth, Angela, Jack and William Schmitt of St. Paul; Joseph E. Schmitt of Belle Plaine, and Mrs. Fred Gericke of Gary, Indiana.
His remains were brought to Belle Plaine Sunday afternoon to the home of his brother, J. E. Schmitt, and the funeral services were conducted Monday morning at Sts. Peter and Paul's church, Father Godfrey officiating. Interment was in the family lot of the parish cemetery beside the grave of a daughter who preceded him in death. Pallbearers were Paul Backes, Phil Boor, Peter Ince, Al Blaha, W. Weldon and Wm. Tritz.
Among those who were here for the funeral were Mrs. Christian Schmitt, Wm. Fischer and family, John, Helen, Genevieve, Angela and William Schmitt, Francis Byres, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Monzel, Frank Monzel Jr., Margaret Monzel, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mullen and daughter Betty, Elisabeth Schmitt, Mrs. Alma Tapping, Mrs. Johanna Piveon, Mrs. Tom Garry, Mrs. Jos Albrecht and son Ervin, Mr. and Mrs. A. Gehrmann, from St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Green and son from Wilkie, Sask; George Nichols from Duluth, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sandon from Elmore, Mrs. Peter J. Schmitt, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Beckman, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beckman and Wm. Hilgers from Jordan; Mrs. Clara Heywood of Minneapolis.
