Burial24 March 1976She was buried on 24 March 1976 at Saint Theodore Cemetery in Ponsford, Becker, Minnesota, United States.
BiographyDavidean’s mother, Ella Siewert, was unmarried when she gave birth to Davidean in Fargo, North Dakota in 1933 at age 26. The father was asserted to be a Native-American man and they never married.

In 1937 Ella Siewert married John C. Roller, known as “DaddyJack”, in Moorhead, Minnesota. Jacqueline “Jackie”, her second daughter was born in July 1938. Ella and Jack Roller worked as the "hired couple" for Louis and Grace Grage on their farm in Cass County, North Dakota.

Ella Siewert Roller died from pneumonia in 1939 when Davidean was 6 years old and Jackie was only 6-8 months old. “Daddy Jack” Roller agreed that Louis and Grace Grage, Jackie’s godparents at her baptism and his employer, take care of Jackie. Later this proceeded to formal adoption. Jackie attended Grandin High School in Grandin, North Dakota and graduated in 1954.

It was believed that Davidean had been scarred by anti-Indian attitudes early on. When her mother died in 1939, Louis Grage’s sister Bernice Grage and her husband Marvin Howard took care of Davidean. The Grage brothers and sisters fostered or adopted about 6 children in the 1930's-40's.

This arrangement didn't go well for Davidean. Grace Grage didn't like Davidean being around Jackie because when Jackie was a toddler, she found Davidean, who was about nine years old at the time, taking Jackie down the road, saying they were going to find their father, “Daddy Jack”. Louis and Grace were always nervous about the possibility of “Daddy Jack” returning and taking Jackie back with him.

In the 1940 census, Davidean was shown living with Minnie Holtorf Grage in Kinyon, Cass County, North Dakota. Later Davidean went to live with her maternal grandmother Bertha Merchel Siewert.

Around 1950, when she was about 16, Davidean ran away to Fargo and from there to Detroit Lakes, MN and things seemed to go better for her. She married Theodore J. Nelson in 1966 and had 5 children. The family lived for a while in Anoka County, Minnesota

Davidean died of breast cancer in March 1976. Her dying wish was to see her sister Jackie who she hadn’t seen for many years. Jackie moved to Texas when she was 18 and married Douglas Bankston in 1975. However, it was the middle of winter in Minnesota which made travel difficult and Jackie was working as a school teacher and had difficulty getting the time off work. Throughout Davidean’s illness, members of the Grage family advocated and cared for Davidean.

After Davidean passed away from cancer in 1976, a maternal aunt of Davidean’s (her mother Ella’s sister) and her new husband took in the children of Davidean and Theodore Nelson.
