1912 History of Knox County, Illinois - Volume II
By Albert J. Perry
The S.J. Clarke Publishing Company, Chicago, IL, 1912

Edward P. Robson, who is intimately connected with the agricultural and financial interests of Knox county, was born on January 5, 1875. He was the grandson of John Robson, who was born near Newcastle, in Northumberland county, England, and who was married to Mary Brown, and he is a son of William Robson, whose birth occurred in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, on the 5th of September, 1831, and who came to America with his parents when a young man. They located first at Beaver Point, Pennsylvania, and in the spring of 1850 removed to Knox county, near Rio. After his marriage he purchased his present homestead near Wataga and afterward engaged in stock-raising and general farming. William Robson was twice married. His first union was to Miss Jane Goff, who was a daughter of Louis Goff*, one of the early settlers of Rio township. To this union three children were born, one of whom survives, Cora Alice. Mrs. Robson passed away in 1867. Mr. Robson's second union occurred in 1871 to Mary E. Gordon, who was born in Victoria, Knox county, November 7, 1847, and was a daughter of Peter Gordon, a native of Scotland, who came to America when a young man and settled at Peoria, where he was employed for three years at six dollars per month. Later, in 1841, he removed to Victoria and was engaged in agricultural pursuits throughout his life. He was married to Miss Mary A. McDowell, who was a daughter of John McDowell, who came to America in 1838, going directly to Knox county. Mrs. Gordon, who had been previously married to William Tate, died in 1900, at the age of eighty-six years. Mrs. Robson is at present sixty-nine years of age and is residing at the home of her son, E. P. Robson, who was the second of three children born to his parents, the others being: Gordon, deceased; and Henry Stewart, whose birth occurred May 18, 1892, and who is residing with his brother. Mrs. Robson is a graduate of the North Western Normal School of Ohio and is a member of the Congregational church of Wataga and of its Ladies' Aid and Missionary Society. Mr. Robson, whose death occurred January 10, 1901, was one of the organizers of the Galesburg National Bank and at the time of his death was serving in the capacity of vice president. In politics he gave his support to the republican party and was one of its active members, among the offices to which he had been elected being that of school director for several years, of highway commissioner for two terms and member of the county board of supervisors for twenty-one years.

Edward P. Robson attended the common schools in his youth and at the age of thirteen years entered Knox College for a three years' course, after which he graduated from Brown's Business College in 1895. Having thus completed his education, he returned home and undertook the management of his father's farm because of the latter's ill health. In addition to general farming he also engaged in stock-raising and in both lines met with immediate success. But he has also interested himself in other undertakings, among these being the Western Tool Works of Galesburg, in which he became interested in 1905 and which is now principally owned by him and known as the Robson Manufacturing Company of Galesburg. Three years previous he and his brother opened the Bank of Wataga, at Wataga, and he has since served in the capacity of president. Biography1889Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, Knox County, Munsell Publishing Company, 1899

Robson, John
, born in Whittington, Northumberland Co, England, March 5, 1827. His father, John Robson, was a farmer and raiser of stock. His mother, Mary (Brown) Robson, was of Scotch descent. He received his education in the English common schools, and spent his youth upon the farm. As a young man, he found employment for a time in a railroad office in the vicinity of his birthplace; but in 1850 he came to America and settled in Knox County, not far from Galesburg. Two brothers, Robert and William, joined him here in the spring of 1851, and together they purchased land and engaged in farming. Three years later, John bought a farm for himself, just north of Henderson, where he continued to reside until his removal to Galesburg in 1889. This farm is still the property of Mr. Robson. As an agriculturist, Mr. Robson has met with notable success, and, like his brother Richard, has conducted his operations on a generous scale. For many years he has been a prominent stockman, buying, feeding, and shipping cattle for the Chicago market.

Lack of time and taste have kept Mr. Robson from an active participation in politics. He is an independent republican, and was elected County Supervisor in 1873.

He is a stockholder in the Galesburg National Bank, and is President of the Glenwood Ice Company. He is a member of the Business Men’s Association of Galesburg. He is an attendant on the services of the Congregational Church.

In Oct. 1873, Mr. Robson was married to Pamela Davis. They have no children living.

HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ILLINOIS KNOX COUNTY,
Munsell Publishing Company, 1899.

Robson, William, son of John and Mary (Brown) Robson, was born near Newcastle, Durham County, England, Sept. 5, 1831. His parents were born near Newcastle, his father in Northumberland County. His paternal grandparents were John and Elizabeth (Stobart) Robson, the former having been born near Manchester England. On the mother’s side, his grandfather was James Brown, and his grandmother’s maiden name was Armstrong.

Mr. Robson received his education — and a very practical education it was—in a select school in England, and also in the cattle business in Newcastle. He came to the United States with his parents, and lived first at Beaver Point, Beaver Co, PA. The family arrived in Knox County early in the spring of 1850 and lived on a farm south of Galesburg till the year 1854, when they removed to Rio Township, where some members of the family still reside. His mother died in 1853, and his father died in Galesburg, aged 87 years. Mr. John Robson was a thoroughly trained English farmer, and reared his children in the most practical manner; he lived a retired life; politically he was a republican.

Mr. Robson remained in Galesburg several years, where he learned the building trade. He was first married in April 1857 to Miss Jane Goff, daughter of Mr. Louis Goff, who was one of the early settlers of Knox County, and held the office of Justice of the Peace in Rio Township for many years. There are two children born of this marriage, Cora Alice and John L. John L. married Miss Jessie Murdock of Galesburg, and resides in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Robson died in 1867.
BurialJanuary 1901He was buried in January 1901 in Wataga Cemetery at Wataga, Knox, Illinois.
