Death9 November 1986Beatrice died on 9 November 1986 at Marywood Residential Community, Crookston, Polk, Minnesota, United States, at age 93.
Obituary11 November 1986Obituary of Beatrice Emilia Richard

Sister Marie Nativity Richard, a Sister of St. Joseph for 75 years, passed away at Marywood Residential Community, Crookston, November 9. She had celebrated her 93rd birthday on November 2.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Richard of Little Falls on November 2, 1893, Emelie Beatrice grew up in that area until 1911 when she entered the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Bourg. Making her novitiate in France, she received the religious garb and the name Sister Marie Nativity on April 22, 1912. After pronouncing first vows in 1913, she returned to the States where she began her long teaching career which spanned 57 years.

For many years she taught grades seven and eight in schools staffed by Sisters of St. Joseph in Crookston, Argyle, Kilkenny, Stewart, Somerset and Superior.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Catherine, Sister Marie Nativity majored in English and French, teaching both these subjects and social studies at St. Joseph's Academy until her retirement at St. Joseph's Provincial House in 1968.

In1972 she was elected the representative of the retired Sisters on the Apostolic Committee of her community, a position which fitted her well because she loved to be with people, working with them and for them.

Sister Marie nativity leaves a legacy of christian example. As an artist, she loved poetry, writing verses herself, or capturing beauty in exquisite needlework and other crafts. In one of the last things she wrote, she said, "We must, by our very being, be formers of christian ideals so as to be the light of the world." This had been her life. Sister Marie nativity is survived by a sister, Mrs. Antoinette Prue, of Sacramento, California, and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Little Falls Transcript, Little Falls, MN, October 1, 1903

The funeral of Mrs. Rachel St. Martin, daughter of Mrs. Philomen Richard of this city, was held from Notre Dame de Lourdes church, Minneapolis, Thursday morning at 9 o'clock.

According to her daughter, Georgianna in 1988:
When Rachel died of consumption, their grandmother Philomene Richard had the girls move to Little Falls because she didn't want them to live with their father. They moved to a house across the street from the Richards and the oldest sister, Eleanor, took responsibility for raising the girls. It was hard on Eleanor and she only married herself for a short time.
Their father, Anthony St. Martin, said "They aren't going to take his daughters away from him."; so he moved to Little Falls and set up a barber shop. He later died there in 1907.

BiographyAs a young man, Gilbert's family moved to Little Falls, Minnesota from Quebec Canada. The 1885 Minnesota census shows Gilbert ( age 23) living in Belle Praire, MN with his family. He and his brother Theodore opened a general store in Bemidji, Minnesota in 1900. In 1902 (age 40), Gilbert came to the mining town of Bolster, Washington, a bustling mining town about 2 miles from Chesaw, Washington and only 2 miles south of the Canadian border. He operated the hotel in Bolster with his brother Theodore until the "boom" collapsed around 1910.

In 1944 (age 82), he moved to Oroville, about 20 miles from Bolster. Gilbert never married and utimately passed away on May 25, 1950 at St Martin's Hospital ( now called the North Valley Hospital) in Tonasket, Washington of old age. He was buried in plot 159-6 in the Oroville Cemetery. ( Entering the cemetery through the second gate, he is buried in the third row, approximately 13 plots to the left - next to Kellogg, Burger, then Gilbert Richard).

Inspection of the burial records at Bergh's Funeral Home showed the funeral was paid for by his neice, Mrs. Richard Hilby of Spokane, Washington. The cost of the funeral was $263.75 and his burial plot was $55.00.
