John started work as a teacher, but soon returned to farming. In 1876 he became a dry goods merchant in Altona, Illinois; in 1878 became a bookkeeper for a grocery firm and in 1886 was a member of a grocery and hardware firm. In 1889 he helped organize the Bank of Altona and became cashier and then president. He held several town offices and was county treasurer from 1894-98.

     Margaret was born circa 1896. She married John Robert Bradshaw, son of John Robert Bradshaw and Annie Elizabeth Wells, in 1920.² Margaret died 5 October 1944 at Christchurch, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. She was buried on 7 October 1944 at in Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand.³
