CUMMING - On the 27th December, at Hazeldean, Echuca, Agnes, the dearly beloved wife of Samuel Cumming, aged 75 years.

     Judith was born on 10 December 1938 at St. Clairsville, Ohio, USA. She was the daughter of William Gibson McGlumphy and Katherine Holowid. She married David Ferdinand Durenberger on 28 April 1962 at Saint John's Abbey Parish, Collegeville, Stearns County, Minnesota, USA.¹ Judith died 14 November 1970 of breast cancer at Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA, at age 31.²

He married Elizabeth McKean on 4 March 1857 by the Church of Scotland at Laurel Villa, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.¹ Elizabeth died on 10 March 1900 of cerebral hemorage at at 343 Ramsey Street, at Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA, at age 62.² She was buried on 11 March 1900 at in Oakland Cemetery, Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA.³

     James was born in 1805 at Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.¹ He was the son of Alexander McKean and Janet (Jessie) Lewis. He married Margaret Clement on 18 December 1834 at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England. (Marriage Register, No. 2984, Manchester Cathederal, Manchester, England. The marriage was witnessed by John and Jean McNish). James died 7 August 1879 at Braeside, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Heart disease.
The entry in the Death Register at the Scottish Records Office, Edinburgh, Scotland stated that the cause of his death was "Apoplexy 2 hours, ____brular disease of the heart for several years". His parents were listed as Alexander McKean, master mason and Jessie Lewis, both deceased. His death certificate was witnessed by his son James Harker McKean of Glasgow and registered on August 14th.


In the 1881 Census, his home at Braeside in Gatehouse of Fleet is now occupied by three Nish children, Mary (10), Alexander (9), and Charlotte (7). The head of the household is listed as Margaret Oldfield, a housekeeper born in England. All the Nish children were born in England.² He was buried in August 1879 at in Girthon Cemetery, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland;

Galloway Advertiser and the Wigtown Free Press, Wigtown, Scotland, August 14, 1879

"Mr James M'Kean, Provost of Gatehouse, died suddenly last week. Mr. M'Kean was long in business in England, and having acquired a fortune he retired and came to reside in his native town, where he was much respected. He took an interest in all municipal and local government affairs about Gatehouse, and was an elder in the Free Church."


In a second obituary in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard dated 13 August 1879, it stated:

"Having served his apprenticeship as a joiner he went in early life to Manchester and worked there for many years as a journeyman. By dint of steady application and native energy he was admitted a partner of the firm of Hay, McNish and McKean, contractors and was able, while still a comparatively young man to retire upon a competency."

In the 1881 Census, two years after his death, his home at Braeside in Gatehouse of Fleet is now occupied by three (Mc)Nish children, Mary (10), Alexander (9), and Charlotte (7). The head of the household is listed as Margaret Oldfield, a housekeeper born in England. All the (Mc)Nish children were born in England.

     James was employed as a master joiner at Manchester, Lancashire, England, in 1835.

James McKean became a partner in the firm of Hay, McNish and McKean. The partnership was formed by 1841 and they were based first on Lower Mosely Street and then Oxford Street, Manchester, England. The business was primarily Joiners, Builders, Packing Case Makers and Saw Millers. The business first appears in the 1838 Manchester Trade Directory.


During his retired life in Gatehouse, he served in several elected positions. They were as follows: 1858 to 1860 - Senior Bailie ( a magistrate at the local Justice court elected by his fellow Town Councilors; 1860 to 1866 - Provost of Gatehouse; 1866 to 1868 - Councilor; 1869 to 1870 - Senior Bailie; 1871 to 1878 - Provost of Gatehouse.

Her death certificate states that she was the widow of Thomas Campbell, grocer. She died 15 Sepember 1894 at High Street, Gatehouse. Her parents were Alexander McKean, master mason, (deceased) and Jessie Lewis (deceased). She died of old age and decay of nature. The informant was Alex Campbell, her son of Whithorn??³ She was buried in September 1894 at in Old Girthon Cemetery on Sandgreen Road, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland;

Jessie died 13 August 1917 at Warrender Park Road, Edinburgh, Morningside District, Midlothian, Scotland. Cerebral embolism and heart failure.

     Margaret was born circa 1848 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. She was the daughter of James McKean and Margaret Clement. She married Thomas Balfour MacNab on 23 September 1873 at Braeside Cottage, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
