Rose Margaret Martin, 90, of Winter, died on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at Hayward Nursing Home.
She was born on Dec. 9, 1914, in Winter to Frank and Mary Caroline (Hoyer) Martin. She graduated from Winter High School where she played on the girls basketball team.
Rose loved life and was very dedicated to her community and church. Rose believed that she was the oldest living citizen born in the village of Winter. She worked at the U.S. Post Office in Winter for 14 years, serving as postmistress for five of those years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Vincent & Vincent (later known as Gerber Brothers Ford) in Winter and then for the Sawyer County Gazette as a bookkeeper, reporter, typist, and proofreader for 39 years before retiring.
Rose was very active at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winter where she was a secretary and prepared the church bulletin every week for many years, organized the bingo, and served as treasurer for a number of years for the Women?s Society. In June 1991 she was honored by the Diocese of Superior with the distinguished Pax Christi Award. Rose was Godmother to many children.
Rose served as the clerk/treasurer for the Winter School District. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as its president, secretary, and treasurer at various times and was on the 4th of July Committee for many years until she was no longer able to do so.
She was a golden member of the Royal Neighbors of America and was a proud member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Tribe.
Rose loved to travel with her friends and kept scrapbooks of her trips to Rome, Nova Scotia, the Smokies, California, and the East Coast. She had many hobbies, including coin collecting, spoon collecting, gardening, playing cards, and going to the casino.
Rose is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins; two sisters-in-law, Rose and Helen; her life-long friend, Loretta Reda, of Ojibwa; and her friend of many years, Doris Hoffman, of Winter.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Roy, Marion, Jerome "Ogie", Francis "Chick", Henry, Mable, and Caroline.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winter. Rev. Fr. Vincent Bromley and Fr. Al Verdegan were concelebrants.
Visitation was on Monday at the church for one hour prior to the service.
Interment was in St. Peter's Cemetery in Winter.
Casket bearers were Casey Benson, Bill Hoyer, and Daniel, David, John, and Patrick Martin.
Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home of Hayward assisted the family with arrangements.

William"Bill" Patrick Martin, 61, of Winter, died Thursday, April 12, at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 9, 1945 in Winter, the son of Jerome "Ogie" and Rose (Hoeft) Martin. He grew up and attended school in Winter, then began working as a woodsman for Petit Forest Products/ Smith Brothers Sawing. He also worked for Robert Arntz Logging and Felser Forest Products, from where he retired. He lived his entire life in Winter and was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church.
He is survived by his mother, Rose of Winter; brothers, Jerome "Hearts" (Marie) Martin of Winter, Robert (Nancy) Martin of Ojibwa, Dan (Marylou) Martin of Winter, David (Diana) Martin of Winter, Tony (Laurie) Martin of Winter; sisters, Margaret (Robert) Jarosz of Chippewa Falls, Jean (John) Suralski of Winter, Joan (Mike) Redix of Winter; sister-in-law, Susan Martin of Winter; many nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome "Ogie" Martin; brother, John Martin; and nephew Robert Jarosz Jr..
Funeral: Mass off Christian Burial was on Monday, April 16, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winter. Father Vincent Bromley officiated. Music was provided by organist Jean Eck and Song Leader, Marie Martin.
Visitation was held prior to the Mass on Monday at the church.
Burial: St. Peter's Cemetery.
Casketbearers: Anthony Martin, Dan Martin, David Martin, Jerome Martin, Robert Martin and Todd Martin.
