John Thomas Martin, 62, of Winter, died Wednesday, August 30 at his home.

He was born Nov. 1, 1943 in Winter, the son of Jerome "Ogie" and Rose (Hoeft) Martin. He grew up and attended school in Winter. He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 1, 1960 until Aug. 15, 1962, and was also in the National Guard for six and one-half years. He was united in marriage to Susan Wiley on June 4, 1966. He worked at the Sawyer County Gazette for 26 years, the DNR for one year and the Marquip Corp for 10 and one-half years. He retired in April 2001. He belonged to many organizations including the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Winter Fire Department, Fire Department Bowling League, American Legion #303, St. Peter's Holy Name Society. He was a member of St. Peter's Church.

He is survived by his wife Susan; daughters Barbara (David) Biller of Winter, Sharon Martin of Hayward; three grandchildren Marcus, Taylor and Trenten Biller of Winter; mother Rose of Winter; brothers Jerome "Hearts" (Marie) Martin of Winter, Robert (Nancy) Martin of Ojibwa, Dan Martin of Winter, David (Diane) Martin of Winter, Tony (Laurie) Martin of Winter, William Martin of Winter; sisters Margaret (Bob) Jarosz of Chippewa Falls, Jean (John) Suralski of Winter, Joan (Mike) Redix of Barronett.

He was preceded in death by his father Jerome "Ogie" Martin and nephew Robert Jarosz.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sept. 2 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winter. Father Vincent Bromley officiated. Music was provided by organist Jean Eck, song leader Ann Thompson and soloist Kathy Schmidt.

Burial: St. Peter's Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Winter American Legion Post 303.
