DEATHS
On the 12th May, at Taieri Beach, Gordon Hughan aged 80 years.

Gordon died 12 May 1881 at Taieri Beach, Otago, South Island, New Zealand.³ He was buried on 14 May 1881 at Taieri Beach, Otago, South Island, New Zealand.
     Gordon and Mary emigrated to Australia and later to Taeri Mouth, South Island, New Zealand in the fall of 1855. Together they had many children. In 1865 a Post Office was established at Taieri Beach and Mr. Gordon Hughan was appointed Postmaster.

     Gordon was born on 9 October 1867 at Carterton, Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.¹ He was the son of Alexander Hughan and Beatrice King. He married Susan Johanna (Susie) Pattison in 1893 at New Zealand. Gordon died 1959 at New Zealand.¹
     Councillor Gordon Hughan, who has continuously occupied a seat on the Carterton Borough Council since 1904, is also a member of the Board of the Carterton Old Men's Home, the High School Committee, the Presbyterian Church management committee, the Order of Freemasons, and one of the trustees of the Foresters' Lodge.

He was born in Carterton in October, 1867, and is the youngest son of Mr. Alexander Hughan, a pioneer settler. After leaving school he was brought up to the blacksmithing trade, and found employment as a journeyman in various parts of the province. He subsequently spent five years in Marlborough, where he worked on the Mahakipawa diggings for twelve months, and for the remainder of the time at his trade. In the year 1895 he returned to Carterton, and established his present business. The premises occupy a site in Pembroke street, and comprise a commodious motor garage, showroom, workshop, and a large smithy. The motor department has a frontage of fifty-five feet to Pembroke street, with a depth of sixty feet, and is fitted up with a repairing plant for both motors and biycles. The machinery is driven by a three-horse power gas engine, and includes a plant for recharging accumulators. The showroom carries a stock of the “Argyle” and “Ford” motor cars, the famous “Motosacoche” motor cycle, the “Raleigh,” the “Royal Enfleld,” and the “Rudge-Whitworth” bicycles, which are imported direct, and also a special machine of the proprietor's own build known as “Excel,” which is a good road bicycle. Six persons are employed in connection with the business.

In the year 1894 Mr. Hughan married Miss Pattison, of Dunedin, Otago, and has one son and three daughters.

     Hellen was born on 6 July 1871 at New Zealand.¹ She was the daughter of Alexander Hughan and Beatrice King. She married William Preston in 1892 at New Zealand.¹ Hellen died 1 July 1956 at Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand, at age 84.

     Hilda was born on 22 October 1892 at Green Island, Otago, South Island, New Zealand.² She was the daughter of John Hughan and Mary Wynn. She married John Youngson on 7 June 1914 at Milton, South Otago, South Island, New Zealand.² Hilda Hannah Bell Hughan was baptized on 17 May 1918 at Oamaru, North Otago, South Island, New Zealand. Hilda burned to death in a backyard fire on 17 May 1918 at Oamaru, North Otago, South Island, New Zealand, at age 25. The children were then sent to their grandmother at Balclutha, New Zealand - Marion Craig, formerly Youngson, nee Smith and were brought up by her.

"An inquest was held in the Courthouse this morning to inquired into the circumstances surrounding the death of Hilda Hanna [sic] Belle YOUNGSON, who died in the Hospital yesterday as the result of burns accidentally received on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Geo BROWNLEE, acted as Coroner, and the jury comprised Messrs F.A. Fox, F.A. Reed, T. Dwyer, B. Noonan, C. Everitt, and J. Harper. John YOUNGSON, laborer, of Humber street, husband of deceased, gave evidence that he last saw his wife prior to the accident on Monday morning, April 29, when he left for Queen's Flat to work, leaving her in good health. He received a telegram at about 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday telling him to come home at once, which he immediately did. He saw his wife at the hospital, and had seen her frequently since then until she died at 4.45 a.m. on the 17th inst.

Dr Hargreaves stated that deceased was admitted to the Hospital on the 15th suffering from extensive burns on the trunk, neck, arms, and face. She never rallied and died at 4.45 a.m. on the 17th. Death was due to shock,
caused by the burns.

Rose Wilson, a married woman living in Humber street, next door to deceased, deposed that she was in her backyard on Wednesday afternoon, the 15th, when she heard Mrs Youngson crying out for help. She, in company with Mrs Turvey, who was with her at the time, immediately ran to her assistance. Mrs Youngson's clothes were then ablaze. They attempted to smother the flames with a sack and a mat. This failed to put them out, and they told her to lie down and roll, which she did. They finally had to resort to water to quench the flames. They then ran back to her house, and, after telephoning for Dr Orbell, gathered up all the oil they could find in the house. Dr Orbell arrived in a short time, and, after attending to her injuries, ordered her removal to the Hospital.

Before the accident Mrs Youngson was burning rubbish in her own garden. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, caused by shock reaulting from severe burns."
