Death of a Mountain Veteran

OSCAR HUGHAN, AGE 96.

Within sight of his centenary - a milestone he always vowed he would mark with a "'rattling good jollo" - grand old man, Oscar Hughan, died at his home, "Glen Iris," Bathurst road, Wentworth Falls, on Thursday last, at the ripe old age of 96 years. Deceased was a wonderful man, of exceptional attainments and great literary ability. He carried his declining years with the vigour and virility of many a man of 50. With the pen and in person, Oscar Hughan was the personification of rugged masculinity — a rough aschler through and through. He was a great writer of both poetry and prose, and, under his different pen-names, contributed largely to all the papers in the Commonwealth and many over-sea magazines.

During his long life the late Oscar Hughan had drained the bitters and sweets of all cups on this world's sideboard. His experience was sound, without becoming embittered, and his heart and his actions at all times as big as himself. A brief sketch of his life, from the pen of a friend of the inky way, will appear in our next issue. Suffice for the present, he passed away peacefully in his sleep — the old sword rusted out in its scabbard — and was laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the Wentworth Falls Cemetery, Rev. A J. Fraser officiating at the graveside. Frost and Co., of Katoomba carried out the funeral, all arrangements being perfect.2
